Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her Aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to be creative and drawn by art. She was a night nurse so that she could give her aunt time that she needed in her working day to pursue her passion for writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was conscious of her social status and taught her how she could use art as a method to express herself. DuVernay who was born living with family members in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to write a script for a movie on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English along with African American Studies. DuVernay started producing to broadcast journalism while she was in her college. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish at the home by a member jury. Her duties left her unhappy in journalism, so she decided to switch careers into the publicity industry. DuVernay was brought in right out of college as the junior publicist for a small studio. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also established a range of promotions and lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
